Common diseases in Poodles
Does your Poodle seem healthy, but sometimes show unusual behaviour?
Sometimes we let our guard down: your dog eats, runs and plays, but suddenly starts limping, sneezing more than usual or scratching non-stop. Although the Poodle is typically an energetic and healthy dog, it is prone to certain hereditary diseases and common issues. Spotting them early can make the difference between a scare and a serious complication.
Joint problems: more common than you think
One of the most common conditions in Toy and Miniature Poodles is patellar luxation, often noticed when they suddenly lift a back paw while walking. They may also suffer from hip dysplasia, particularly the larger ones. Maintaining moderate exercise, a balanced diet and using a dog harness that does not strain their body helps prevent discomfort and worsening problems.

Skin problems: beyond itching
The Poodle’s skin is sensitive and can easily develop allergies, fungal infections or atopic dermatitis. If they lick excessively, scratch non-stop or red patches appear, it’s time to visit the vet. Use gentle shampoos, avoid artificial fragrances and keep their coat clean to reduce irritation.
Ear infections: the great silent enemy
Their floppy ears restrict ventilation and encourage moisture build-up, increasing the risk of otitis. Check their ears weekly and clean them with suitable products. If you notice a bad smell, frequent head shaking or sensitivity when touched, act quickly to prevent more serious infections.
Eye problems: don’t overlook them
The Poodle can develop cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy, two conditions that progress gradually but are irreversible. If you notice them bumping into objects, struggling to navigate new places or seeing worse at night, consult your vet as soon as possible.

Digestive disorders: warning signs in their stools
Many Poodles have sensitive digestion, especially when their diet is not properly balanced. Diarrhoea, wind or frequent vomiting are not normal. Adjusting their diet, changing their kibble or reducing processed treats usually makes a significant difference to their gastrointestinal wellbeing.
