DISCAN, Therapy and Assistance Dogs Association

Since March 2023, we have proudly collaborated with Discan, a non-profit Spanish association whose main work is to train and form assistance and therapy dogs to improve and help those in need.

Since 2007, the professionals at Discan and their wonderful dogs have helped countless individuals, enhancing the quality of life for all of them.

From now on, 5% of every purchase made in our online store will be donated to Discan with the aim of supporting and encouraging them to continue this essential work.

What is an assistance dog?

An assistance dog is designed to help individuals with disabilities, whether physical or intellectual, by assisting with physical tasks. Discan trains these dogs for two years to become essential companions that assist their owners in daily activities.

These dogs hold a certification that validates their training, allowing them to accompany their owners in any public area without restrictions.

In Spain, five types of assistance dogs are currently recognized:

Guide dogs: trained to guide individuals with visual impairments.

Service dogs: trained to assist individuals with reduced mobility.

Autism dogs: these dogs assist individuals (especially children) with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Alert dogs: trained to alert individuals experiencing sensory disconnects, such as an epileptic seizure.

Signal dogs: help individuals with hearing impairments.

What is a therapy dog?

The therapy dog plays a crucial role in Animal-Assisted Therapies (AAT) as it becomes a fundamental member of the therapist's team and develops a strong emotional bond with the patient.

Therapy dogs are trained to perform a series of tricks that assist the professional in achieving improvement goals related to the patient's physical, emotional, relational, and cognitive states.

Several groups benefit from this type of therapy, including individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or ADHD, those with high levels of stress, prison inmates, and people at risk of social exclusion, among others.
